Thoughts on the ASUS G74SX

I got a chance to play with an ASUS G74SX from Newegg. What a big honking computer. It’s covered by some kind of matte black rubberized coating similar to what you’d find on a Thinkpad. It’s also pretty powerful and the internals are decently laid out.

Software-wise, there’s not too much crapware on it. It took only a few minutes to uninstall. I had an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD that’s I tried on it. Things seemed to work without any glaring issues.

Anyways, here are some pics of the exterior, the hard drive and RAM area, and the pre-installed crapware that the computer came with.

Prolimatech Megahelem Photos and Measurements #fb

leave a comment »

I just got a Prolimatech Megahelem heatsink. I attached to it a single Scythe Slipstream fan, but I plan on replacing that for two Akasa Vipers in a push/pull configuration.

I know a lot of people have worries about whether it would fit in a case. I believe it can mount vertically or horizontally. Here are some photos with a ruler to measure the heatsink. I can confirm it fits on a Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 in a Cooler Master HAF 922 case.

If you have RAM with tall heatsinks, like some of the Patriot Viper series RAM, they won’t fit under the heatsink with a fan, which approximately covers the first slot (In the case of the GA-x48-DQ6, the DDRII1 slot). You should be able to use the second and fourth slots for dual channel functionality, though, but using all four slots with tall RAM is right out.

EDIT: Wow, a 30% compression ratio really comes out on the background there, using GIMP. Maybe I should’ve chosen a higher compression ratio. :lazy:
